Valentine’s Day 2019

Today we celebrate Valentine’s Day 2019. I hope every one of you has a “valentine”! Christine is my valentine. When my father was young, he kept all his holiday cards. After he died, I discovered them in an old cardboard candy box. Most were valentines which the children exchanged, and thus, are children’s rather than adult cards for the most part. They range from 1917 to the late 1920’s. These are not all. Some I put up before years back, but I don’t know which ones, so, I post a lot of them. Sorry but there are no cats.

  I suppose the flip side of the coin is that I did not keep any of mine myself; however, I found a collection of cards for all occasions sent to me from when I was born thru my early years, so I do have some, though I don’t remember them at all. Most have letters inside. I have never thought of posting any of those. Thanks for your comments Kavita!

I enjoy seeing the early 1900s art. Thanks for sharing. It’s special that you have these from your dad. The one with the two children on bicycles is really cute.

    I recognize many names on the cards–people long since passed away–some friends, neighbours and relatives. That is probably why they were kept in later years. Thanks for your comment Kavita!

oh wow! These are awesome! Way better then the valentine’s cards i remember exchanging in elementary school with all our classmates.

  Hard to believe they are one generation removed from me? I have seen a few of my very old ones about somewhere though I wasn’t the one saving them. These are half the valentines. The oldest one is top left dated 1917. Lady with big hat. Styles were very different. Thanks Mary for your comment.

These card are wonderful! My grandparents were from a poor fishing village in Japan, so I doubt if they ever exchanged valentine cards. I did keep the cards that Grandma gave to me as a child: there are a few cute cat ones, but since I liked horses back then, I have a lot of horse- and cowboy-themed cards. (I wanted to be a cowboy when I grew up. Didn’t happen, though I’m not bad at wrangling cats.) Happy Valentine’s Day!

That is so cool that you have these! As you probably know, I have many vintage cat-themed cards. In fact, a friend gifts me vintage cards for holidays instead of new ones, and it’s pretty cool. Thanks for sharing these.
