Cat Food Shortages

Today I show the cat food shelves at my local unnamed supermarket. It is worse than ever. It is almost impossible to buy the canned food my cats like. I got on my hands and knees and found two 24 can variety packs shoved all the way to the back of the bottom shelf. In true hoarder fashion I took them both. It is every cat for himself it looks like. Not having success ordering on line either so I been getting more expensive foods to try on everybody. At least they eat it. Zeke is worried. He is a big foodie. I am officially now a cat food hoarder. If this gets worse and it probably will since nothing seems to get better, things are going to get bad.

  1. |The supplies have gone up and down here north of the border. We were really low in the stores in October and November, but things have been better since and I can get cat food online. But supplies have been coming from the east instead of the west coast because of the highway closures north of the border, Good Luck! We purray you wont have to subsist on sardines and tuna!

    1. I hope so but I don’t think so. Heard the other day there is a shortage of paper baby diapers. I cannot confirm that. Glad I don’t have to deal with that problem. Dry cat food in bags is no problem that I can see.

    1. A lot of cats have allergies to fish–I have one, so that is why I think the fish cans are still available in small quantities here. I did go to PetSmart and buy some “premium” food which I hope they will eat happily.

  3. 😱 I have seen cat food shelves looking emptier than normal but nothing as bad as your store! Foster doesn’t care for canned food, and he eats prescription dry food for urinary health. So far I haven’t had any trouble getting it. I wonder if its just a canned food issue.

  4. Running out of food here isn’t an option, either. The housekeeper stays in touch with Chewy and we get our regular food once a month without a hitch. Best of luck on the food front for your furries! We get the 12.5 oz cans of Wellness to save money, even though I prefer the better option of 5.5 oz. I just go with the flow, as long as I eat!! – Tom x

    1. Aside from they are out of what I want, the free standard shipping takes over a week for delivery to me, mainly because it all seems to come from the East Coast and the kid with the bicycle they give it too doesn’t pedal very fast.

  5. My cat’s prescription food was backordered on his veterinarian’s website, but Chewy has filled the order three, four times now, no delays or problems. It could be the brand or brands has/have the can problem, and that major buyers (like Chewy) get preferential treatment when it comes to buying what’s available. Hill’s Prescription Science Diet K/D chicken pate is what Andy eats. Good luck finding what your kitties eat. I know how cats can be very particular about what we feed them.

  6. Looks like the shelves around here. I have been having a lot of trouble getting my picky Emmy’s food. And Sammy’s prescription diet is finally back in stock at Chewy, but was out for at least 6 months. It is scary.

  7. Wow, that is awful. I agree it just doesn’t make sense that it’s caused by an aluminum can shortage. Makes me wonder what it’s like here and how long I’ll wait for my online order.

  8. What a story… Thank goodness there’s still plenty of cat food in this part of the world. These are really very strange times… Wish people would act in a normal way!

      1. Nope, it is not due to the virus. According to what someone at Chewy told me yesterday (because Roary’s food is temporarily out of stock til next week), there is an aluminum can shortage and that’s the reason.

  9. Don’t worry Zeke, your Dad will find a way! It is bad here too, but not that bad! We were looking up homemade cat food recipes just in case … so far we’re managing to find canned cat food. Best of luck to you in your hunt for cat food.

      1. I was talking with a customer rep at Petco, where I get Sunny’s food. The delivery system is the primary problem: the ingredients for the food I order come from Southeast Asia and is packaged in Thailand, so we have to wait for new shipments to be delivered from Asia. The ingredients for dog food *mostly* come from North America, though I don’t know if this is true anymore, given that a lot of pet food is manufactured in China. Remember back in 2007 when many dogs were dying from melamine-tainted food, some of it sold by high-priced “quality” American brands? I don’t know about the aluminum can shortage: the local Coca-Cola bottler doesn’t seem to have a problem (yet).

Anyway, Sunny’s subscription delivery is over a week overdue. I used her last can of food on Tuesday, so last night she and I had Chicken of the Sea tuna for dinner. I mixed hers with a little warm water, as she loves her food to be somewhat soupy. I ate mine as a sandwich. Luckily I got in the habit of buying canned goods when they’re on sale, so we have a few cans of fish in the pantry. Sunny does not complain!

  10. Just exactly what I meant s\the several times I blogged about it. I go to the pet food store places first. Then to grocery stores, It’s ALL gone/ There has to be a reason for this. All the excuses people mouthed are nothing but taking head things they hear and repeat. There is NO fact to back up the shortage of this or that..and so on. It seems deliberate.
