Nicholas is a male shorthair black tabby a little over one year old. Where did he come from? My daughter went looking for a new playmate for Zeke after Scooby died. She did not know at the time Zeke was going to die when she picked Nicholas out at the shelter. No one wanted him because his tail is cut off and maybe 7 inches long. She decided to adopt him but had to wait 4 weeks as he had an upper respiratory infection that had to be treated. I was out of the loop on this whole development. Zeke died with Nicolas still in treatment. We picked up Zeke’s remains and brought them home last Thursday afternoon. Little did I know Nicolas was waiting in the wings all this time. Later that afternoon my daughter went out and came back with him. I was very surprised and not too happy. I hate surprises. Fate determined Zeke was never going to meet Nicolas. When I heard the story no one wanted him because of his tail, I decided he could stay. He was named Nicholas as he was born near Christmas 2023 after St. Nicholas. We decided to keep that name. He is in quarantine to ensure the U.R.I. is cured. A few photos below but not of his tail.

Glad I stopped by today to get caught up on your newest arrival. I still have to read your newer posts, but congratulations on adopting Nicholas and I hope he settles in quickly.

Nicholas still in quarantine and Opie has not seen him, but at night they talk to each other behind the door. Nicholas missed his first birthday in captivity so yesterday he got some new toys he likes a lot. He is a bit shy of me still so I don’t get the best photo opportunities,

Bless your heart for deciding NIcholas could stay, Greg. We’re so sorry that Zeke left you so soon after Scooby. We only learned of this sad news just this morning. Nicholas won’t replace either of them, but we hope he helps you heal and adds new joy to your life.

Scooby and Zeke’s passings were a one-two sucker punch. I am not over it. Watching Nicholas play is a joy. He enjoys life so much. I think he is going to grow into a big boy.

In 2015 I brought Scooby home to be a playmate for Zeke. 10 years later the playmate theme played out again but went wrong. Nicholas is settling in. He is wary of me but I bring all his meals so he is getting a little better. It’s only been a few days.

I really wasn’t in the mood for a new cat, and I would have chosen an old one, but he’s here now so that is his good fortune. I couldn’t send him back if people wouldn’t adopt him.

Welcome to your home Nicholas. Don’t you worry about your tail length. 7 inches is perfectly fine. As for all of us out here, we will love you, and we don’t care about the length of your tail. You are handsome and going to be so loved. Just be happy and tell you Dad I wish him happiness.
