Scooby update

This is an update on Scooby for those who are interested.
In short his blood glucose was good and he is now off of his insulin injections. He is still on his diabetic diet. Hopefully we will not have a relapse. He is under the care of a new group of veterinarians. Today I post a photo of him before he was ill with Zeke and Marigold, and an after illness photo with Zeke. He was a 14 pound cat and now he is a 10 pound cat soaking wet.

Checking my photographs I see I have taken only a few of Opie all this year! Where has she been hiding? Here she is ready to celebrate Spring by getting out to do the yard work.

Easter holiday is here, and I want to remind people those white Easter lilies are deadly to cats if they eat them!!! Otherwise, have a great celebration.

cat beds and washing machine

Marigold’s cat bed

Marigold sleeps in her orange cat bed most of the time. For that reason, it became time to give it a wash. It is over 6 years old. I got it at Walgreens. It seems to wash in the machine OK on gentle cycle and cold water. It must drip dry. I am afraid to put it into the dryer! It’s shape is getting a little saggy, but it is soft. Compare it to the tiger bed which has hardly been washed at all.

Marigold is not happy. She cannot find her bed.

The good news is that the cat bed is clean and upon the drying rack. The face and tail are still intact. Soon Marigold can go back into her bed!

Scooby (edited photo)

Scooby and I are trying to entertain ourselves. A big storm blew through and knocked out our power. So we listen to music on a battery powered radio. You may notice Scooby’s shaved neck. He had something inserted into his jugular vein at the hospital so they could monitor his blood. As you can see, he is looking much better. We do have differences about how much food he gets, and when he gets it. We are having a discussion about that right now. I am afraid we cannot make changes yet, and must follow the doctor’s advice.

Night shift report

Marigold takes the Night shift watching over Scooby. As some of you know, Scooby became deathly ill. This is what happened. He had a rapid onset of diabetes accelerated by a cortisone shot he got for allergies. The cortisone is insulin resistant and caused the unknown underlying diabetes to attack immediately with a vengeance. He had tested negative for diabetes several months ago. He was almost comatose when he went to the animal hospital. He was severely dehydrated. His liver and spleen were enlarged and very painful. Lymphoma was suspected, but Scooby luckily did not test positive for it. It was caused by diabetes. He was in the intensive care unit. With fluids and insulin, after 4 days he came home. He was a 14 pound cat when he went in. Now he is a ten pound cat! I am told he is now at a good weight. All my other cats are 10 pounders.

I have been giving him insulin injections. He is a very good boy about them. An ultrasound shows his liver and spleen shrunk back down and do not hurt any more. I had a diabetic cat a long time ago, so it was nothing new to me to give the cat injections. We are almost completely out of the woods now. He appears to be in remission. 40% of cats go into remission if they are treated early. His daily insulin has been gradually reduced now from 1 unit twice per day to a tiny 1/2 unit once per day. He eats a low carbohydrate canned food diet. Dry food, even the “DM” diabetes management foods have too many carbs when compared to wet foods. Dry food also gave Scooby crystals in his urine and nearly clogged him up a few months back!

Two weeks and Scooby will go back in for another test. We are hoping for good results. In this photograph, Scooby is sleeping peacefully at home. I have noticed that cats know when something is wrong. Thanks again for all the prayers and purrs.  The camera lens perspective has distorted the sizes of the two cats!

Inspector Marigold does a doubletake!

Inspector Marigold must look at every task that is done here, especially when it is computer related. She does not want any blog post interruptions! As most often happens, when you really need to print something, the printer cartridge is empty. I needed to replace the black one. The cartridges cost much more than they are worth, but we are held hostage by the manufacturers. I have taken matters into my own hands. I bought a black refill kit. For less than the price of one cartridge, I can fill 4 – 8! The operation went well. I didn’t even spill any ink or get any on me! Marigold inspects the finished cartridge.

Smells full to me!

Who is going to clear off this table? I want my paper bag back! Who said you could use it?

Doubletake

Marigold does a doubletake is just a guess. It is a weird digital photo. It looks like maybe her head is double exposed. With a film camera I would believe it, but not with a digital. I am not a photography expert. Is a puzzlement! There is no mirror in the room. I have next to no ability with regard to “photo editing”. Taken with a phone. Perhaps it was a low light slow exposure and I moved? Any thoughts? Maybe she was just beside herself.
